DIABETES (TYPE 1)
The Diabetes in Schools website provides resources that schools need to support students to manage their diabetes, including information about the following:
IMPLEMENTING A STUDENT'S DIABETES MANAGEMENT PLAN
The student’s individual diabetes management plan needs to be effectively implemented in the school setting, with the appropriate measures put in place to enable staff to support the student’s needs, as set out in the student’s plan.
ENSURING THAT THERE IS ACCESS TO TRAINING AND EDUCATION
All school staff play a role in supporting the student and they can now access appropriate training so that they can discharge their duty of care to students. There are 3 levels of training.
COMMUNICATION
Good communication between the parents/carers and the members of the school diabetes team is fundamental so that each party can understand each other’s roles and responsibilities, as well as ensuring that any changes or adjustments to the child’s needs are communicated effectively to school staff, including the designated staff member.

ENSURING THAT THERE IS ACCESS TO TRAINING AND EDUCATION

- All school staff should take Level 1 online training (approx. 15 minutes)
- Core staff should take Level 2 online training (approx. 90 minutes)
- Where hands-on, face-to-face training is required (such as administering an insulin injection), select staff complete Level 3 training. This is provided free of charge. The Principal needs to apply for this. All Level 3 participants must have already completed Level 1 and Level 2 training.
